Trying to EDUCATE Myself
Education has been a term closely associated with me and my family for several centuries now. As far as I can remember, all male members in my family starting from my great grandfather have been teachers, professors, research workers etc. During my childhood days I used to have long discussions with my father on most of my actions, and the sole point of those discussions was - was that action right or wrong? Could it have been done better differently? The discussions used to range from logic, illogic, philosophy, practicality, emotionality, spirituality, to sheer annoyance ;-)
But overall, I felt I was getting educated through it all. And truly, I learnt a lot. Most of my life now can be rationally defined through many of those discussions.
When I went to college for a Computer Science education, I did not attend classes I did not like. I really worked hard on subjects I liked. Fortunately or unfortunately, I could still clear the exams I did not like. Finally I attained all the degrees I needed for the job, but education only in areas I liked. Fortunately or unfortunately, I landed up in jobs only in the areas I studied in college (nopes, back then, in India, any job looked good, choices were meagre).
After landing up closer to Stanford, I joined their academic department and started attending their courses, working extra hours learning new stuff. It was so damn interesting. The question that is left open to me now is - should I continue doing individual courses because I like them, or should I plan for a degree from Stanford while I am at it? And frankly, I now see a certificate/degree as an insult to the entire concept of education. If people wish to respect someone simply because he/she holds a PhD or an MBA from a top notch university, shouldn't we start redefining our views for them ?
During one of the courses at Stanford, I clearly mentioned to the professor and the assistants that I have no intention of learning all the things that are being taught in this course. I had more intention to learn some part of that course in more detail then the rest. He simply could not do anything about it because the other students (regular guys, working for their certificate) needed that education. I immediately realized I do not want to be one of them. Even with programming assignments they had bunch of stuff which was required but seemingly useless and a wastage of time to me. Again, they could not do anything about it.
I have come to the bitter conclusion that I do not want to be another engineer, or another manager, or another executive anymore. I want to be what I was born to be. And now comes the big question - What on earth is that ?????
Well, for now I will be content with the fact that I realized something nice today. I will be happy to have thought that the certifications of this world are not of any further interest to me. And I will be curious to know what way is then my way. Any pointers are welcome....

As i can make out , you r a bit confused in deciding what to do coz at this point of your career you think that u don't want to be just an engineer or a manager or even an executive ... its something like going back to the drawing board. Its seems you are doing your work , whatever you do , despite unpleasantness.
Try to enjoy your work in the way its going , dnt think to do something different , just do the same thing in a different way.
In our times specialists are highly overrated. In this era of rapid social and technical change , we need more generalists , people who can provide broad prospectives .Its definitely better to really know something well , than to know it half way but on the other hand a person cant know everything there is to know about everything..and this is also a fact that before being a specialist you need to be a generalist.
And its a common fact that nobody knows y he or she is here on earth..weather they realise it or not...

Yep, we do not know what we are here for. But quest for an answer to such questions lead more towards spirituality than anything else. Not sure if I am cut out for that quest just yet :-)
There will always be unpleasantness in your work. Any job you take, any work you do. If we think unpleasantness will go away just by doing a new work, or an old work differently, well, I guess that is not entirely true.
As far as generalists/specialists are concerned, true, we need more generalists. We need more specialists too, or at least need to improve the quality of existing so-called specialists :-)
What I am more pissed off about is our method of grading a person based on his certifications. I just do not agree with this system of education anymore. I think we need to abolish all grades and certifications and we need to make the entire education/career system recommendation based. Let the four year engg course be a lab work in a particular stream headed by a prof. Let the prof. personally work with all those students and identify which one is better. Let companies hire based on the prof's reco. Let us rank all the prof's based on the work they have done and the sort of persons they are and then give them worth as per their ranking. Let regular coursework run as optional preliminary schedule needed for student's lab tasks and has no say on student's grading. Let education be free from grading.
Yeah, I should kill the idealistic brain in me. Many people have pointed out the same.....

And then, let students contribute to existing applications/softwares (etc) as a requirement to complete their degree course. And then let the usability of these developments decide the students' grades. I defy all sanity ;-)
I completely agree what u said ... but things cant be in the same way as we want . As per grading system is concerned... it cant be implemented on all the fields , i think u r from software field n u think in the same way.The way u suggested are good in there own terms but not for all the fields..it is an integral part of the whole education system...i agree that there are many flaws in grading system n many times judgements are really wrong , but , as u suggested , let professors decide?
Do u think that this is the best way to choose...no my dear..they can be more biased..n in fact they are...and i think somewhere in ur life, sooner or later , u will face this too...

Yes, flaws shall be present in any system, whatever we implement. They are present in the existing one and they shall be present in any modified version too. You are right, my views might be more related to software than other domains. I just had a random thought. Of course it needs to be shaped a lot before the final picture is ready. But I do feel there is something fundamentally wrong with the present system of education.....(sigh!)....
Of course , there are many things wrong in this present education system and in many ways it is poor as a church bell... but it is not due to any particular system , it is due to the mishandeling of those systems..
N nothing can be perfect in this world....flaws are there in each and every system..but i agree from u ,coz in order to make other systems flawless we need to first make education system flawless..

Yep. I once had a business plan to start an educational institution in India. There I wanted to implement some revolutionary ideas to begin with. But it went down the drain with life's journey. Maybe I will revisit it some day.........Thanks for visiting the blog.
Hmmmm... really good to know
Good thought points , Here in south korea - most of the master degree program are totally lab based, and career path begins from Prof. recommendation and most of the profs are honest while writing such reco.
